A poker tournament is a tournament where players compete by playing poker. The winner of the tournament is the person who wins all the chips and while other players are awarded places based on the time of their elimination. In most tournaments, blinds are raised over after specified periods of time. In free poker online tournaments player's chips serve only to determine the player's placement.
To enter the tournament, a player must usually pay a certain price, referred to as the "buy-in". Then a player gets a fixed amount of chips for the whole tournament. Some poker tournaments do not have a buy-in, and so they are called freerolls. The player who gets all the chips in the end of the tournament takes first place, the second-to-last earns 2nd, and so on.
Prizes can be awarded in one of the following ways:
1. Fixed: each placing corresponds to a certain prize, i.e. fixed amount of players, fixed prize-amount to the winners (usually three first-place prizes)
1. Proportional: the prizes of the tournament are determined by the amount of players and the sum of all buy-ins. The percentages depend on the number of participants and will increase payout positions as participation increases
There are 2 varieties of free poker tournaments:
1. MTTs (Multi-table Tournaments) involve many players playing simultaneously at dozens or even hundreds of tables
2. Sit&Go (or Single-table Tournaments): the tournament starts as soon as all the players take their seats (5 or 9)
Free poker tournaments are a good way to spend your time with your friends, where you can swap stories, hone your poker skills, chat with friends and make friends with other poker lovers.
