From the 1st of September to the 31st of December 2009 players battled it out to gain as many Celebpoker points as they could. The top 20 finishers were guaranteed entry into this elite event. Participants in the final also gained a $500 cash payout. Furthermore, all players were able to redeem their collected CelebPoker Points for extra tournament tokens or cash prizes!

The event took place on the 7th of January 2010; players started with 6000 in chips and had 25 minute blind levels. The slow structure allowed for some great deep stacked poker to be played while players jockeyed for position to take down the tournament.

The first player was eliminated by unluckily having his AA cracked when his opponent, holding pocket KK hit a miracle king on the river. When there were just four players remaining the action was tense; even though all these elite players gained $500 automatically only three places got paid the big bucks. “Miegstroem” was raised and moved in with KQ; his opponent’s pocket nines held up and he finished as the “bubble boy”. Not bad new for the final three players though, who were guaranteed huge payouts.

After seven grueling hours of play the tournament was over. “Rasasca” came 3rd for a $5000 payday while “BLUFF66666” made $10,000 for coming in 2nd. Congratulations to “Mortegra” for walking away with $25,000; not too bad for a days work!

The winner Mortegra, is a 29 year old former Physics student from Graz, Austria, who has been playing Poker for a living for 5 ½ years now. Usually a limit Hold’Em cash game player, he didn’t believe he had much chance against the others who he has studied to see that they were more often than not winning NL players. Coming back from a break from poker due to a recent downswing, winning was not something that Mortegra believed would happen.

Mortegra was lucky to get some big hands un-proportionately often and consequently was able to take the chip lead quite early and maintain it. As always, there were some lucky and unlucky moments post flop, but a deciding factor in the earlier stages of  the tournament was Mortegra getting dealt AA, KK and QQ at least 6 times in total. Play turned the other way for Mortegra when he lost a big pot with A2 against Bluff66666’s K8 on a board of K228K, which suddenly put him into last position. The 3-way action to settle the prizes was long and intense. The key hand for Mortegra winning the tournament was when the pot got bet, raised and re-raised by Rasasca on a J87 board. Mortegra had JT and a tough decision to make, which he finally called. The turn brought another J which didn’t really change the situation and the river which finally put them both all-in gave a 9, being one of the 7 outs Mortegra had against Rasasca’s KJ. With this large chip lead the play was still intense and tiring, Mortegra kept the majority of  the chips until winning the tournament with his 99 against bluff666666’s AQ.
